Wel where to start on my vacation last week. Well it had it's ups & downs and I sure don't mean in bed either (insert rim shot here). Things started off bad and somehow seemed to get worse as the week went along.
Sunday was departure day. We loaded up the van to head across town to meet up with our bus group. Arrival time of the coach was supposed to be at 9:30. My cell phone rings and the voice on the other end says that the coach has died along the road and that another one is on it's way to meet us. It should be along by 10:30 or so and we will be on the road. 11:30 came and the new coach pulls in. It is a wash tub with wheels. Despite the delay and my frame of mind I boarded the bus and we headed up the highway. We stopped at the duty free for booze. I figured I was gonna need alot so I got a couple of 40oz'r and headed to the cash. After paying for the goods we pulled up to the border and was cleared with no problems. We then had found out that bus #1 had to be towed back home cause the rear end had fell out of the junker trap. We stopped for lunch in Houlton, made our way from there to North Conway, New Hampshire for our home away from home for 2 nights. We had supper at the local Chinese place next door to the hotel. Well some of us ate, the rest got sick and went back to the hotel. Later on I was sick as well from the food or was it the vodka I had consumed - not sure !!!
We then headed out the next morning to Heritage New Hampshire. It is a 9 acre indoor historical settlement telling the stories of yesteryear. I always enjoy going there cause it is so rich in history and to see a new group of people going thru is something to hear their comments. We then headed back into town and stopped at Settler's Green Outlet Shopping Facility. Watch out Nike here I come. Shopping we did, Come out of there with some new soles for the feet and quarter of the price I would pay at home even with the exchange rate. We then hit Appleby's for lunch and drinks. The food was good and the drinks well they were wet at least. Time to meet the bus. Coach # 2 bad broke down at the gas station and had to be towed to the local garage for parts that would arrive the next day. We went back to our hotel in a local shuttle service van (#3) that was older then Moses decked out in purple mood lighting and fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror (and a thong or two). We then all had a few drinks and I had a talk with the tour director. We had to have some things change and changes were made.
We went dancing on Monday night with a group in Conway NH. The caller was an interesting bloke and the dancers were great. It was just a little too warm for dancing. We went to and from the dance in transportation # 4 - Turtle Taxi. These guys were a hoot and we had some good laughs. We made it back to the hotel at 9:30 ish only to discover that everything in food wise closes at 9 pm in North Conway. We searched high and low and ended up having supper from Dunkin Donuts in the end. It was a minor issue compared to the trip so far. That night I went to bed after polishing off the remaining 3/4 of a bottle of vodka and wondering why the room was spinning at 2 in the morning !
Tuesday morning we got up to another sunny day and was ready to head out on the next coach (#5) this was the deluxe coach with all the amenities of home in it. We had a professional driver. nice seats, could see out of the bus, had air conditioning, a driver who didn't need a booster seat. It was perfect ! It was also short lived. We lost this driver in St Johnsbury cause wash tub (#2) was fixed and back to us for the rest of the trip. We crossed to border again at Derby Line Vermont but not before .... you guessed it - stopping at Duty Free for more booze. With a 40 oz of Kahlua & a 40 oz of 151 Proof Rum under my arm we ended up in Magog Quebec for the next 3 nights. We went dancing also this night in Cowansville Quebec with a wonderful group. Their caller, their dancers, the whole night was awesome. I can see myself going back there again to dance sometime real soon.
Wednesday was a sleep in morning, till 7:30 or so. We had a 3 course breakfast, tour of the Benoit Abbey to visit the monks and attend their morning chants in Gregorian. We watched them after service make cheese and cider. We headed back to the hotel for happy half hour of free booze (notice a theme here with this post) before a 4 course lunch. That afternoon we headed up the ski lift to the Mont Orford ski lodge for a looksy around to see what was all to see. IF it had been clear we could have seen Newport, Vermont and Montreal, Quebec from atop of Orford some 540 meters in the air. It was another gorgeous day and a bit warm. We came back to the hotel for another happy half hour & 5 course meal.
Thursday morning we awoke to drizzle falling outside. We had another 3 course breakfast and then headed out to take a cruise on Lake Memphremagog. It was the right kind of day for the cruise. A little clearer and it would have been excellent. The only drawback was the Mexican captain of the boat who demanded a tip as we got off the boat. That I dealt with - it was included in the price of the ticket and refused all of our group to give him more ! We headed back for happy half hour & lunch then that afternoon hit the winery at Jack Daniel's vineyard. We sampled 14 different glasses of wine before leaving and heading back to the hotel and well you know what we did. We had some entertainment at the hotel that night and then back to the rooms to pack and to have a few more toddy's before turning in for the night.
Friday morning we loaded up the wash tub and headed for Quebec City. We arrived near lunch time and took in the buffet at lunch at the revolving dining room. It was not the best meal I had had all week long. I mean who can compare gourmet food to stale donughts from Dunkin Donuts ! We then headed out to a city tour then to our hotel for the evening. We had alot of great laughs, some good drinks at supper and some good food. Still not like Magog meals but nothing can compare to those at all !
Saturday morning we headed out early on a rainy day towards home in the wash tub. It had no heat in it either we found out just like no air conditioning on the warm days. It was frigid on the way home but we made due. I slept most of the way home trying to dry out mostly from all the toddy's we had consumed all week and then said good bye to our friends and called it a vacation.
All in all despite the bus problems and driver being a flucking moron it was a good week away. Would do that trip again (second time around it now) in a heart beat. I will be working at getting my photos posted somewhere within the next couple of days as work is hellish and I am on my new diet this week. Kinda depressing after all the meals last week.
Anywho back to the grindstone and I will try and visit with all of you in the next day or so !
